Official: Warzone Will No Longer Be Available on Last-Gen Consoles
After nearly six years since its initial launch, Call of Duty: Warzone is shutting down on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, Activision has officially announced.
Nearly 6 years after its initial launch, Call of Duty: Warzone will close its doors and no longer be available to play on last-gen consoles, Activision, the company maintaining the game, has officially announced. The announcement about ending support for the game on last-gen consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) comes alongside the official reveal of the new mainline entry in the Call of Duty series—Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4—which will also be the first game in the series to launch exclusively on current-gen consoles (meaning PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2), after several years in which mainline entries in the series also launched on last-gen consoles.
According to Activision's official announcement, ending support for Warzone on last-gen consoles will be done gradually, with the first phase of the process taking effect on June 4, when the ability to download Warzone from the PS4 and Xbox One digital stores will be blocked, though access to the game will still be possible for those who downloaded it beforehand. Additionally, the game's in-game store will also be blocked on these consoles, and it will not be possible to purchase skins/various upgrades from it. The second phase of the process will take effect at a later stage—according to Activision, alongside the launch of MW4's first content season, when the game will also be fully blocked from play on last-gen consoles, with access to the game's servers completely disconnected. Activision noted that MW4's first content season will begin shortly after the game's launch, meaning access will likely be blocked during November (MW4 launches on October 23).
