Destiny 2 Development to Cease, Bungie Likely to Announce Layoffs
Bungie has officially announced it will end active development of new content for Destiny 2, with the final update launching June 9th, while Bloomberg reports the company will soon announce significant layoffs.
Bungie has officially announced that it will cease active development of new content for Destiny 2. The game's final content update will be called "Monument of Triumph" and will launch on June 9th. Additionally, it currently appears there are no plans to continue developing the franchise, according to Bungie's announcement stating that the plan right now is to focus on new games (which effectively means "Destiny 3" is not in active development). Meanwhile, Bloomberg magazine reported that Bungie will soon announce a relatively massive wave of layoffs within the company, though the company has not officially confirmed this as of the time of writing.

It's worth noting that unfortunately, much of Bungie's current market position is not promising. Over the past three years, the company has suffered through two relatively large rounds of layoffs that led to a reduction of approximately 17% of the company's workforce, even after being acquired by Sony in 2022 for $3.6 billion. The quality of the recent content the company released for Destiny 2 has also received mixed reactions from audiences and critics, and if all that weren't enough, the company's other game, Marathon, which focuses on the Extraction Shooter genre, hasn't received good enough reviews or attracted a large and impressive player base—according to SteamDB, the game's daily average player count is only 12,054 players, with an all-time peak of just 88,337 players (a fairly dismal number compared to the game's competitors in the market).
